BEIRUT, Lebanon, July 24 (UPI) -- Lebanon needs Hezbollah as a defense against Israel, a Christian ally of the Shiite Muslim movement said Sunday.

Michel Aoun, head of the Free Patriotic Movement, told a radio station: "We cannot survive as a country without this resisting strength. … The people, the army and the resistance [Hezbollah] … are united and connected to each other against the enemy."

Speaking of the last Lebanese-Israeli war, he said, "Israel has not created peace with its surroundings … 2006 marked the beginning of the collapse."

"There is no doubt that the Israeli people want peace because no human being can live to only fight. … But the Zionist leadership is thinking of something else," he added.

Aoun's comments, reported by The Daily Star of Beirut, came a day after Hezbollah again refused to turns over its weapons to the Lebanese army.
