Israelis camp out to protest high rents

JERUSALEM, July 22 (UPI) -- Israelis protesting high rents will move their tent city to a park outside the Knesset in Jerusalem, leaders said Friday.

The planned move to Wohl Rose Park Sunday follows appeals by Mayor Nir Barkat to vacate the Army Square at the walls of the Old City, The Jerusalem Post reported, citing Israel Radio.

On Monday, the Parliament is to vote on key housing legislation.

Organizers of Tel Aviv's tent city are calling a "massive demonstration" for Saturday night, filmmaker Daphni Leef said.

"We call on all of the tent cities from across Israel to come … [and] lay our demands before the government of Israel and regain our rights," she said.

On Thursday evening, hundreds of protesters staged a torch-lit march through downtown Tel Aviv, a preview of Saturday's rally.

Leef said no politicians will be invited or allowed to speak at the rally.
