NAPLES, Italy, July 15 (UPI) -- A provincial official in Italy was arrested Friday for embezzlement and a vote-buying scheme with organized crime, police said.

Alberico Gambino, a member of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's People of Freedom Party in the Campania region, was apprehended along with six associates, ANSA reported.

Police said Gambino, working with the heads of a soccer club and two clan members of a Camorra family outside Naples, "created a system to control the economic activities of the area" and benefited from a vote-buying operation.
