Nigeria city bans motorbikes after attacks

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, July 8 (UPI) -- A city in northern Nigeria has banned motorcycles because terrorists have been using them to launch bomb attacks.

Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno state announced the ban in Maiduguri Thursday after a rash of lethal bombings and gun attacks in the state capital blamed on the Boko Haram Islamic extremist group. (Its name means "Western education is forbidden.")

The ban applies to Maiduguri and the neighboring Jere Local Government Area, where most of the violence has taken place, the Nigeria Bulletin reported.

Shettima said he acted on the advice of the state's security council.
