WUIKINUXV, British Columbia, July 6 (UPI) -- A Canadian man was recovering Wednesday from wounds inflicted by a grizzly bear, authorities said.

John Johnson Jr. was in stable condition at Victoria General Hospital with cuts, puncture wounds and a broken arm, The Victoria Times Colonist reported.

The 51-year-old forestry worker had been picking berries along a dirt road near the British Columbia village of Wuikinuxv Monday when he was attacked. He walked about a mile to get help.

Johnson had been accompanied by his two dogs and officials speculated they may have flushed the big bear, likely a mother with cubs, into the open where it attack him, the newspaper said.

Provincial conservation officers were on attack site Wednesday. Conservation office inspector Doug Forsdick said it was too soon to say whether any action would be taken over the bear.
