Tahrir Square rally demands police trials

CAIRO, July 1 (UPI) -- Egyptians rallied in Cairo's Tahrir Square Friday, where a cleric said the people were ready to hang police who had killed protesters during the revolution.

The "Friday of Retribution and Loyalty to the Martyrs of the Revolution" was called by a coalition of opposition groups but opposed by the Muslim Brotherhood, the official Middle East News Agency reported.

In a sermon to the crowd, Sheik Mazhar Shahin demanded speedy trials for security officers and their superiors responsible for killing "martyrs."

"Do not force us to try them ourselves, for we are ready to hang gallows in Tahrir Square if we do not witness fair trials," he said.

Demonstrators denounced police intimidation of the families of slain protesters and some called for the resignation of Interior Minister Mansour al-Essawy, whom they accuse of continuing Mubarak regime policies.

Security forces ceded the square to protesters, who directed traffic.
