Chilean students and teachers plan protest

SANTIAGO, Chile, June 29 (UPI) -- Chilean students and teachers are organizing another national strike on Thursday in the country's capital to demand free, public education, officials said.

The Chilean Students Federation and Chilean Teachers' Association plan to protest against privatization and for-profit education conditioned by the market, La Tercera reported Wednesday.

President of the Teachers' Association Jaime Gajardo said the groups have proposed more financing for universities from the government.

He said government officials are avoiding public education for the Chilean people.

The groups called the march for Thursday afternoon from Plaza Italia to Plaza de los Heroes.

Thousands of students and teachers filled the streets of Santiago almost two weeks ago demanding more government investment in public education.
