Knox 'shocked' at appeal testimony

PERUGIA, Italy, June 27 (UPI) -- Amanda Knox told an Italian court Monday she was "shocked" when a convicted murderer implicated her in the death of roommate Meredith Kercher.

Testifying as a witness in U.S. student Knox's appeal, Rudy Guede denied he told other inmates Knox and her boyfriend weren't present when her roommate was murdered in 2007.

After Guede finished testifying and left the courtroom, Knox, speaking in Italian, told the court that the only time she, Sollecito and Guede were in the same room was in a courtroom.

"I am shocked and anguished by these declarations ... he knows we weren't there," she told the court.

Guede, 24, was accused of murder, sexual assault and taking about $427, credit cards and two cell phones that belonged to Kercher. In 2009, Knox, 23, was sentenced to 26 years in an Italian prison for Kercher's murder. Sollecito was sentenced 25 years.

The testimony Monday from Guede, serving a 16-year prison sentence for the sexual assault and murder in Italy of British student Kercher, came a week after a prison inmate testified Guede told him Knox and her then-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, weren't there the night Kercher was killed, ABC News reported.

Guede specifically was called to testify about what inmate Mario Alessi said Guede had told him in jail: that Kercher was killed by one of Guede's friends, not Knox or Sollecito.

Prosecutors read a letter in which Guede denied Alessi's claims and indicated Knox and Sollecito were tied to Kercher's death.

ABC News said the hearing in Perugia likely would be the last with witnesses in the appeal before the court begins hearing challenges on the independent forensic experts' report, scheduled to begin in July.
