UPS says it will improve parcel screening

LONDON, June 17 (UPI) -- United Parcel Service says it is working with British officials to improve the screening of air cargo.

The British government barred the shipping company from screening cargo at some facilities in the United Kingdom because of security issues, the BBC reported Friday.

Britain's Department for Transport didn't say what the security issues comprise and it didn't identify any of the locations affected by its ruling. A spokesperson said the ban would continue until UPS "has satisfied current security requirements."

UPS said it is "working to address the problems" identified by the government and warned shippers some deliveries would be delayed.

"Some facilities have been temporarily taken offline, which in some cases has led to delays in the movement of packages," a UPS spokesperson said. "UPS has activated contingency plans, communicated with customers and expects service levels to return to normal early next week."

In October a bomb was found on a U.S.-bound UPS cargo plane and a similar bomb was found on a Federal Express jet in Dubai.
