Swedish serial rapist gets 12-year term

OREBRO, Sweden, June 15 (UPI) -- A man police call Sweden's worst serial rapist was sentenced to 12 years in prison Wednesday.

Niklas Eliasson, 24, called the "Orebro rapist," was convicted in April of 14 assaults on women, the Swedish news agency TT reported.

He was found not to have any mental illness that would affect his sentence, and also must pay 732,000 kronor ($113,000) to his victims, along with 50,000 kronor ($7,727) to the crime victims' fund.

Eliasson's arrest last fall came as a relief for women in the central Swedish town of Orebro living in fear after a series of brutal rapes starting in 2005. He admitted the crimes but gave no explanation.

Eliasson told investigators he began stalking people at age 13, had few friends, became addicted to Internet pornography and intended to kill several victims before taking his own life.

The charges included eight cases of attempted rape or aggravated rape, three charges of aggravated rape, two cases of assault, two cases of sexual molestation, and robbery and weapons offenses.
