BAQUBA, Iraq, June 14 (UPI) -- Security forces took control of an Iraqi government building in Baquba seized by militants in a bloody attack in which 11 people died Tuesday, officials said.

Eight civilians were killed, and in the fight to reclaim the building, at least three of the gunmen were killed, the Kuwaiti news service KUNA reported. At least 30 people were injured.

Diyala security officials said an explosives-filled vehicle blew up near the province's council building while armed men stormed the building. Security forces later moved in to re-take the building in the province's capital.

"The security forces of Diyala province have imposed full control of the [provincial] council's building," Dulair Hassan, chairman of the province's Security Team, told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

The insurgents held several people hostage, CNN reported. Officials said no members of the governing board were hurt.
