Quakes rattle New Zealand, fray nerves

ROLLESTON, New Zealand, June 6 (UPI) -- A series of earthquakes and aftershocks rattled the Canterbury region of New Zealand Monday, prompting shops to close and rattling nerves.

A 4.5-magnitude quake struck near Rolleston, about 12 miles southwest of Christchurch, after several smaller quakes in the 3.7-to-3.8 magnitude range were felt, TVNZ reported.

Five aftershocks were felt in the region, the strongest one a 5.5-magnitude near Rolleston, officials said.

"Mother Nature, we've had enough. We really have. I don't know how much more our nerves, our houses can take," Rolleston resident Fiona McWhirtir said.

Officials said they received reports of only one home sustaining structural damage.

Damaged and fallen stock prompted the New World Rolleston supermarket close after the temblor. It reopened several hours later, owner Roy Bridgman told TVNZ.

"Our staff is all fine. We just cleaned the shop straight away," Bridgman said.

A Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority spokesman said the earthquake didn't cause "any great concerns" and the authority has not restricted access to Christchurch's red zone, the central business district damaged by an earthquake earlier this year, The (Christchurch) Press reported.

"There's no immediate danger, but we are keeping an eye on it," the spokesman said.
