Bahrain medical personnel's trial delayed

MANAMA, Bahrain, June 6 (UPI) -- A court in Bahrain has delayed for a week the trial of 47 medical personnel accused of fomenting political unrest in the Middle East nation.

The National Safety Court of First Instance Monday pushed the trial of the medical staff to June 13, the news Web site gulfnews.com reported.

The court charged 20 members of the staff with possessing unlicensed weapons, calling for the toppling of the political regime, the forceful occupation of public property and inciting hatred of a segment of the society.

Another 27 were charged with refusing to treat patients, non-compliance with laws and regulations, disturbing public order, disseminating false information and inciting hatred.

Acting Health Minister Fatima al-Beloushi and Justice Minister Shaikh Khalid Bin Ali al-Khalifa allege doctors in the groups have been charged for their involvement in criminal activities, but gulfnews.com reported an unnamed international medical group contended the arrests have been part of a campaign to target doctors for treating protesters calling for democratic reforms.
