Former Egyptian minister gets prison term

CAIRO, June 4 (UPI) -- A former Egyptian finance minister was sentenced Saturday in absentia to 30 years in prison and ordered to pay $10 million in restitution, court officials said.

The BBC, citing sources in the court, said a judge in Cairo gave Youseff Boutros Ghali 15 years each for squandering public money and using his position for personal gain. Boutros Ghali, who left the country in February with his wife, was convicted in absentia.

Former President Hosni Mubarak remains in detention in a hospital. His wife, Suzanne, was released on bail after turning over millions of dollars in assets.

Two former members of Mubarak's government were sentenced to prison in May. Former Tourism Minister Zuhair Garranah got five years for illegally granting tourism licenses, while former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly got 12 years for money-laundering and profiteering.

Boutros Ghali is the nephew of Boutros Boutros Ghali, the former secretary-general of the United Nations. He has a doctorate in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and worked for the International Monetary Fund before joining the government as an economic adviser in 1986.
