Nepalese Census asks about 'third gender'

KHARTOUM, Nepal, May 31 (UPI) -- Nepalese citizens responding to the Census had a third option this year when it came to gender -- the so-called third gender.

The third gender includes transgendered people, CNN reported. Many are happy they are getting official recognition.

"I was born as a girl, but as I grew up I felt I was a boy. Today I totally feel like a man," said Dilu Buduja, 35, telling CNN he identified himself as third gender.

Bikash Bista, a spokesman for the national Office of Statistics, said the Census hopes to make Nepalese aware of prejudice against the transgendered.
