U.K. warns tourists about Costa Rica

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica, May 30 (UPI) -- The British government is warning tourists about the increase in crime and number of missing people in Costa Rica, officials said.

The U.K. government published an official warning on its travel advice page informing visitors to beware of violent crime against tourists in the Central American country, Tico Times reported Monday.

The advisory follows a letter written to British Prime Minister David Cameron by David Dixon asking for help in solving the disappearance of his brother, Michael.

Michael Dixon disappeared in October 2009 after leaving his hotel room in Tamarindo, on the Pacific coast.

The travel advice site says eight foreign nationals have vanished in the last two years.

David Dixon said the British government's intervention is necessary in finding his brother. He applauded the changes on the U.K. travel Web site.

A French couple disappeared in Quepos, on the central Pacific coast, in mid-April.
