Lawyer seeks medical tests for Mladic

BELGRADE, Serbia, May 30 (UPI) -- A lawyer for war crimes suspect Ratko Mladic said he would ask a Belgrade, Serbia, court for an independent team of doctors to determine his client's health.

Attorney Milos Saljic said he would formally appeal the decision to extradite Mladic, 69, to The Hague, Netherlands, even though he hadn't discussed his action with his client, B92 reported Monday.

"I believe the trial will not go ahead, because I do not believe Mladic will see the start of that process in front of the Hague tribunal," Saljic said. "His health is in an alarming state; it is necessary that he is examined by cardiologists, neurosurgeons, orthopedists, gastroenterologists."

The former general who led Bosnian Serb forces in the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina between 1992 and 1995 was captured Thursday after spending 16 years in hiding. He faces numerous war crimes and genocide charges by the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

Meanwhile, a Serb Radical Party official said the party doesn't consider itself responsible for violence that erupted after its rally supporting Mladic Sunday and called on police to publicly identify those arrested, B92 said.

SRS official and Belgian lawmaker Dragan Todorovic said some rally participants "heard that the rioters' activities were coordinated by their leaders."

The party tried to ensure the rally was conducted in accordance to law, but "young men wearing hoods and scarves on their faces baited and attacked police," Todorovic said, claiming police pushed the infiltrators into the crowd that gathered for the rally.

Police said 10 civilians and 26 police officers were injured and 111 people were arrested.
