Report says Mubarak trial set this week

CAIRO, May 23 (UPI) -- Egyptian officials said ousted President Hosni Mubarak will go on trial this week on charges of corruption and abuse of power, Israel Radio reported Monday.

The officials said Mubarak, who is hospitalized in the resort community of Sharm el-Sheik, would be taken to court within three days. They did not say where the trial would be conducted.

Last week, Egyptian Minister of Justice Mohammed Abdel Aziz al-Guidi said the former president would not be transferred to the Tora Prison in Cairo until his health improves.

In recent days, reports said Mubarak is suffering from deep depression.

On Sunday, a court sentenced Mohammed Ibrahim Abdel Monem, a policeman, to death for the alleged killing of 18 anti-government protesters and the wounding of 15 others Jan. 28 during the uprising that led to Muburak's ouster, Ahram Online reported.

Monem was tried in absentia and his whereabouts is unknown.

The court ordered officials to hunt down Monem, who also goes by the name of Mohammed el-Seni.
