Security forces said they went to a house in Yala about 6:30 p.m., responding to a tip that militants were using it as a base. Officials said they returned fire when the occupants of the house started shooting.

Ma-ae has been on the most wanted list since 2006, when he allegedly killed Col. Sutthisak Prasertsi, a special task force commander in Yala. In 2007, he was allegedly involved in a shootout of a passenger van that left eight people dead and a bomb attack on a truck that killed 11 rangers.

He was allegedly involved in killing former Bannang Sata Police Chief Sompien Eksomya in March 2010
