2 dead in explosion at Chinese iPad plant

CHENGDU, China, May 21 (UPI) -- An explosion at a factory in southwestern China where the iPad 2 is manufactured killed two people Friday and injured 16, local officials said.

The plant in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, is operated by Hongfujin Precision Electronics (Chengdu) Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of Foxconn Technology Group, Xinhua, the official government news agency, reported. Foxconn, headquartered in Taiwan, is the world's biggest electronics manufacturing contractor.

The explosion occurred around 7 p.m., city officials said. The cause was still under investigation.

Three of the injured were seriously hurt. All were treated at a Chengdu hospital.

Foxconn opened the $2 billion plant in October.
