Student charged with slandering police

PERUGIA, Italy, May 17 (UPI) -- Amanda Knox, the U.S. college student convicted of killing her British housemate in Italy, was back in court Tuesday to face a slander charge.

Knox, now serving a 26-year term, is accused of lying about police by testifying she had been subjected to abusive questioning, ABC News reported. The procedural hearing lasted only 17 minutes and was then adjourned until Nov. 15.

Knox was a student at the University of Washington spending a year in Perugia when she was arrested in 2007. The victim, Meredith Kercher, was a student from the University of Leeds in England.

In 2009, Knox and her former boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, were convicted of killing Kercher during a drug-fueled sex session. Rudy Guede, an immigrant from Ivory Coast, was also found guilty in a separate, fast-track proceeding.

Knox and Sollecito say Guede was the sole killer.

She appeared relaxed when she was escorted into the courtroom. Her father Curt Knox was there.

Curt Knox and his ex-wife, Edda Mellas, also face slander charges for statements they made in interviews with British newspapers.
