6.5 quake rocks Papua New Guinea

BUKA, Papua New Guinea, May 16 (UPI) -- A 6.5-magnitude earthquake rattled Papua New Guinea Monday, seismic monitors showed.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 4:37 a.m. about 75 miles west of Arawa, 149 miles west-northwest of Chirovanga in the Solomon Islands, 438 miles west-northwest of Honiari in the Solomon Islands and 1,470 miles north of Brisbane, Australia, at a depth of nearly 27 miles.

Radio New Zealand reported the National Disaster Center in Papua New Guinea said there had been no reports of damage or injuries, and it was unaware of any tsunami threat to the region.
