ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, May 12 (UPI) -- A strike by an unmanned U.S. aircraft aimed at a vehicle in northwestern Pakistan killed at least eight people Thursday, regional officials said.

The vehicle was destroyed, sources told the Iranian Islamic Republic News Agency. The U.S. drone fired two missiles.

The attack took place in the Data Khel region of North Waziristan, a tribal area officials say is a sanctuary for Taliban and al-Qaida fighters.

The drone strike was the third since Osama bin Laden was killed early this month in a U.S. raid on his compound in Abbotabad, north of Islamabad. More than 200 people are believed to have been killed in 28 attacks by unmanned U.S. aircraft this year.
