OLE MARORI, Kenya, May 8 (UPI) -- Four children in Kenya were killed Sunday while playing with a hand grenade they found in a cow pasture near Ngong township, police said.

Investigators told The Standard the area has been used for military training.

The victims were ages 6 to 9 years and apparently had no clue the object they had found while tending cattle was dangerous. The field has been used for training since the 1960s and unexploded ordnance is frequently found there.

"Sometimes our cows are killed by stray bullets from the nearby shooting range," said villager Dickson Ole Ntikoisa.

Sunday's blast set off a panic in Ole Marori village after it became known another group of kids had also found a discarded grenade and taken it to their homestead, the Daily Nation said.

Authorities dispatched a bomb squad to take possession of the second grenade.
