Taliban strikes targets in Kandahar

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, May 7 (UPI) -- The Taliban has claimed responsibility for attacks in the southern Afghan city of Kandahar that injured at least 11 people Saturday.

Militants attacked government buildings including the National Directorate of Security, a police headquarters, the Kandahar city headquarters and the provincial governor's office, CNN reported.

The Taliban said the strikes are part of its "Bader operation," a code name for its spring offensive, launched last week, the report said. The injured included police officers.

"From the beginning of this attack, more then 10 explosions have happened across Kandahar city," said Zelmai Ayoubi, a spokesman for the Kandahar governor.

The Taliban attacks came a day after the group confirmed the killing of bin Laden by U.S. Navy Seals. It said the terrorist's death would give "new impetus to current Jihad."
