SAMARA, Russia, May 6 (UPI) -- Russian firefighters said they didn't know what caused an apartment complex fire that killed at least six people and injured 39 others in the city of Samara.

RIA Novosti reported that about eight people, including a child, were being treated at a hospital for their injuries after the Friday fire.

Russia's fire safety record is poor, with about 15,000 people dying from fires annually.

In the United States, which has twice the population of Russia, about 3,400 people die from fires each year, the report said.
