ABUJA, Nigeria, April 29 (UPI) -- The three major opposition parties in Nigeria's largest state say they have rejected the results of the governorship election there for alleged malpractices.
The Action Congress of Nigeria, the Congress for Progressive Change and All Nigeria Peoples Party issued a joint statement rejecting the results of the Niger State election in which the Independent National Electoral Commission declared Gov. Babangida Aliyu the winner Thursday, The Nation reported.
"As a result of all these and many incidents of election malpractices, which include the huge amount of financial inducement of voters, the ACN, CPC and ANPP in Niger State reject the election results," the statement said.
The parties have refused to sign the election result sheets.
Meanwhile, the INEC said that after the completion of the country's general election it would deregister as many as 60 registered political parties.
Under Nigerian election law, parties that fail to win a seat in the National or State Assembly election can be deregistered, All-Africa.com reported.
