Mine accident kills eight in China

BEIJING, April 29 (UPI) -- Carbon monoxide poisoning in a lead-zinc mine in China's northwest Gansu province killed eight miners and inspectors, authorities said Friday.

The victims were among 14 people who had entered the mine, which belongs to Baiyin Nonferrous Metal Group Co. Ltd., a major Chinese producer of non-ferrous metals, Xinhua reported.

After three inspectors failed to return from a routine inspection of the mine, 11 rescuers were sent in to search for them, the report said.

Eight died of carbon monoxide poisoning, even though the gas level had been brought down, officials said.

Five more managed to come out and the sixth was later rescued, the report said.
