Policeman shoots self after DUI arrest

BOGOTA, April 27 (UPI) -- A Colombian police officer who was arrested for drunken driving killed himself before being tested for alcohol use, officials said.

The officer, whose name was not released, shot himself in the head after being arrested in Bogota for driving under the influence of alcohol, Colombia Reports said.

The suspected drunken driver had crashed into a taxi in the Fontibon district and then fled the accident scene.

The taxi driver followed the policeman to his home where armed police officers arrested him.

While being escorted to be tested for alcohol use at a nearby police station, the arrested police officer shot himself and died before arriving at a hospital.

Bogota authorities are investigating the case.
