Medvedev to visit Chernobyl

MOSCOW, April 25 (UPI) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Monday he will visit Chernobyl, which remains highly contaminated 25 years after the worst nuclear disaster in history.

"I will go to Chernobyl tomorrow," Medvedev said at the Kremlin during an award ceremony honoring cleanup participants of the 1986 disaster.

The area around the Chernobyl plant, which lies about 93 miles from Ukraine's capital of Kiev, is in an ongoing state of contamination from the nuclear meltdown of the reactor's core, explosion at the reactor and resultant fallout, RIA Novosti reported.

Immense areas of what are now Ukraine, Belarus and Russia were affected by particulate radiation resulting in massive death and the relocation of 200,000 people.
