CANBERRA, Australia, April 24 (UPI) -- The Australian government has issued a strong warning for people not to travel to Syria and for Australians to leave the country amid civil unrest.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said in a statement Sunday that the security environment is getting worse and there is a very high risk of violent protests.

Foreign Affairs Minister Kevin Rudd has strongly condemned the recent attacks on protesters in Syria, which have left dozens dead.
He said in a news release that violence against peaceful protesters is "abhorrent, and must stop."
