Kenya on alert for Easter terror strikes

NAIROBI, Kenya, April 22 (UPI) -- Kenyan police warned Friday that Somali terrorists may attack during the Easter weekend.

The al-Shabaab group has threatened to strike such targets as "shopping malls, places of worship, government buildings and recreational areas," Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere said in a statement reported by The Nation newspaper.

"We have taken measures to improve security in and around the possible targets by, among others, increasing security surveillance patrols," he said.

Iteere urged the public to cooperate with police and report suspicious activity.

Al-Shabaab is believed to be responsible for bombing two locations in Kampala, Uganda, where fans were watching the World Cup finals last summer, killing 76 people. There have been attacks in Kenya as well.
