Couple charged with killing girl

SYDNEY, April 22 (UPI) -- Human remains that may be those of a missing girl were found Friday after her mother and stepfather were charged with killing her, police in Australia said.

Kristi Abrahams, 28, and Robert Smith, 31, were arrested at their home in the Sydney suburb of Shalvey, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. They were denied bail at a brief court hearing and rejected the opportunity to participate through a video link.

Both were charged with murder, authorities said.

Kiesha Abrahams, who would have turned 7 Friday, disappeared nine months ago. Witnesses said they last saw her about three weeks before she was reported missing.

Officers began searching a large stretch of open ground in Shalvey early Friday and said they found what could be Kiesha's remains.

Abrahams and Smith are scheduled for another court appearance next week.
