6.6-magnitude quake rumbles off N.Z. coast

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, April 18 (UPI) -- A 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the northeast New Zealand coast Monday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a local tsunami warning but said a widespread destructive tsunami was not a threat, The Herald Sun of Southbank, Australia, reported.

The USGS initially reported the magnitude at 6.4.

The earthquake, about 5 miles deep, was about 343 miles east-northeast of Auckland and 565 miles east-northeast of Wellington.

There were no initial reports of damage.
