Don't ask what's in candy, Swede advises

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, April 17 (UPI) -- As Easter approaches, candy-loving Swedes are reminded that their favorite treats are full of hidden animal products.

"When you think about what is inside candy, the ingredients are a much bigger problem than the additives, which are all tested and approved," Asa Brugard Konde, a nutritionist at the National Food Administration, told the consumer advice newspaper Rad och Ron, as reported by the TT news agency.

Red candies get their color from dried insects, and other candies are held together with pig gelatin, she noted, but infection is not a risk.

Swedes eat the most candy in the world per capita, and consumption doubles at Easter, the newspaper said.

"Normally we say that the things people eat every once in a while doesn't have such a big impact, but if it's too much, like children who eat too much candy, it can be a problem," said Konde.
