Police exhume 1989 suicide in rape probe

EXETER, England, April 13 (UPI) -- British police exhumed the body of a woman who took her own life more than 20 years ago to determine whether she was repeatedly raped before her suicide.

Belinda "Binny" Day, whose body was exhumed Tuesday, is to be re-interred Wednesday in the graveyard in East Devon where she was buried in 1989 after her remains are examined, Sky News reported.

Day, 27, a twice-married mother of three, threw herself off a cliff in Budleigh Salterton in 1989. While an inquest at the time determined her death was a suicide, investigators now say they believe she may have been driven to it by repeated sexual abuse by more than one man.

Her older brother, Adrian "Tommy" Dance, received a 21-year prison sentence last year for sexual crimes.

"I would like to appeal to anyone who knew Binny in the '70s and '80s who may have any information that could assist this investigation to come forward and talk to me," said Detective Constable Mike Chalmers, who is heading the investigation.

Chalmers said several members of Day's family are helping with the investigation.
