61 dead in Thailand flooding

BANGKOK, April 10 (UPI) -- The death toll in Thailand's flood-stricken southern provinces has reached 61, with flooding completely destroying nearly 400 homes, officials said.

The Interior Ministry's Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department told the Bangkok Post Sunday the flooding has damaged more than 10,000 homes.

The flooding also damaged nearly 6,000 roads, 600 bridges, nearly 700 schools and 176 official buildings.

Flood waters were receding in some regions, with the exception of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Surat Thani and Trang.

Twenty-six of the fatalities occurred in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Additionally, 12 people died in Surath Thani and Krabi, five in Phatthalung, three in Chumpon, two in Trang and one in Phangnga provinces.
