U.K. faces possible water shortage

LONDON, April 8 (UPI) -- An unseasonably warm and dry spring in the United Kingdom could leave the country facing water shortages, officials said.

The Environment Agency said that in the driest March in 50 years England and Wales received only 0.82 inches of rain, a third of the normal average, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

The situation was worst in East Anglia, location of much of the country's agriculture that consumes a large amount of water for irrigation purposes.

Some reservoirs were running 20 percent below normal levels for the time of year, officials said.

Water companies are closely monitoring the situation and have warned of possible restrictions on domestic water use.

The Met Office said the warm weather would continue over the weekend.
