BOGOTA, April 6 (UPI) -- The United States is expected to press for extradition of an accused Colombian drug lord who has offered to provide information on trafficking, officials said.
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos has said Walid Makled will be extradited to Venezuela. But former President Alberto Uribe told The Miami Herald the Colombian government has not made a final decision.
Makled was arrested in August on a U.S. warrant, and Venezuela and the United States have asked for him. Santos said Venezuela has more serious charges, including murder, and made the first application for extradition.
In an interview Sunday with Univision, Makled said he can provide information to the United States on his dealings with people in the Venezuelan government, including some with close ties to President Hugo Chavez. He said he has been paying Gen. Hugo Carvajal, the head of military intelligence, more than $20,000 a week, and has five legislators and 40 military officers on his payroll.
He described a steady stream of drug flights from Venezuela to Honduras.
"From Honduras they go to Mexico and from Mexico to the United States," he said.
