Chinese PM urges fight against corruption

BEIJING, April 6 (UPI) -- Official corruption in China remains a grave problem despite the government's crackdown, Premier Wen Jiabao has told the Cabinet.

In a speech to the Cabinet late last month, the full text of which was released Tuesday, Wen said fighting the "grave" problem is "extremely arduous" due to a lack of regulation or inefficient enforcement and supervision, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The report said Wen announced a series of anti-graft priorities for this year in an effort to check official misconduct, including abuse of power, bribe taking, and dereliction of duty.

Wen noted officials, along with their families and their aides, should not be allowed to interfere with or manipulate tender and bidding activities. The officials should also disclose their assets and the employment of their family members.

Wen said China has made progress in addressing the complaints of citizens and reducing administrative costs in the past year, but warned corruption and other problems could threaten the country's stability.

Xinhua reported about 146,000 officials across China were punished for disciplinary violations in 2010.
