SANAA, Yemen, April 3 (UPI) -- One person was killed and at least 830 people wounded Sunday when Yemeni troops attacked protesters in the city of Taiz, a hospital reported.
Gov. Hamoud al-Soufi denied any deaths, CNN reported, citing the government's Saba news agency.
Nine people sustained gunshot wounds, more than 60 were beaten, and the rest suffered tear gas inhalation, a field hospital told CNN.
Al-Soufi blamed "infiltrators and some young hotheads" for attacking soldiers.
Parliament Speaker Yahya al-Raee, a leader of President Ali Abdullah Saleh's ruling party, rejected a transition plan offered by the opposition alliance, the Joint Meeting Parties, under which Saleh would surrender power to Vice President Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi. Hadi would then reform the security forces to assure freedom for elections.
Saleh affirmed Sunday his readiness to discuss handing over power under a constitutional process, Saba reported.
Meeting supporters from Taiz, he called on the Joint Meeting Parties to halt "protests, blocking roads, assassinations and insurgency in some armed forces units."
