Taliban attacks NATO Afghan base

KABUL, Afghanistan, April 2 (UPI) -- At least six Afghan insurgents were killed Saturday in an attack on a NATO military base near Kabul, military officials said.

Three NATO soldiers were injured in the attack by the guerrillas, two of whom were wearing the Muslim full-body women's burqas, The Washington Post reported.

The insurgents were armed with Kalashnikov automatic weapons, but didn't breach the base's perimeter, NATO said. U.S. military said its forces shot two of the attackers and the others detonated suicide bomb-vests.

The attack came a day after a mob overtook a United Nations office in the northern city of Mazar-i Sharif, the BBC reported.

Seven international workers were killed in the attack rebels said was in retaliation for a Florida preacher's burning of the Muslim holy book, the Koran, on March 20.

Meanwhile, government officials said insurgent attacks and anti-government demonstrations in the regional capital of Kandahar resulted in nine deaths and injured more than 80 others, the reports said.

Regional governmental spokesman Zalmay Ayoubi said 16 armed protesters were arrested after cars and a bus were torched.
