In Beni Suef, south of Cairo, police gunfire killed 19 people and wounded more than 300 Jan. 28.

Lower-ranking officers already have been charged, and the prosecutor demanded that security forces find and detain any fugitive officers trying to escape justice.

In an unprecedented step last week, Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud charged former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly and other officials with abetting the murder and the attempted murder of hundreds of protesters.
