Egypt denies Mubarak left for Saudi Arabia

CAIRO, March 28 (UPI) -- Egypt's ruling council denies reports Hosni Mubarak went to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment, saying the ousted president is still under house arrest.

Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces Monday posted a statement on its Facebook page saying Mubarak and his family were in Egypt despite same-day local media reports he had gone to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, seeking treatment for pancreatic cancer, the Egyptian newspaper al-Masry al-Youm reported.

A handful of Saudi potentates extended to Mubarak King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz's invitation to come as their guest.

The Mubarak family faces charges of corruption, their assets have been frozen and on Feb. 28 they were banned from traveling outside Egypt, the newspaper said.

Al-Masry al-Youm said the Saudi king was the first Arab leader to fully support Mubarak during the Egyptian revolution leading to his ouster, describing the demonstrators as "infiltrators" wanting to devastate the country and its unity.
