SAINT ANDRE DE COTONE, Corsica, March 23 (UPI) -- Police in Corsica said they are investigating the shooting death of a village mayor, the fifth politician to be assassinated on the island since 1990.
Mayor Dominique Domarchi of Saint Andre de Cotone was shot to death as he climbed the stairs to his apartment while his wife and two children were sleeping inside, Radio France Internationale reported Wednesday.

Police said the mayor had returned home late after attending a reception following Sunday's cantonal election.
The French Mediterranean island, which has an armed separatist movement, is also home to some of France's best-known gangsters.
