New round of killings hit Karachi

KARACHI, Pakistan, March 20 (UPI) -- A new wave of political, ethnic and target killings claimed several lives in Pakistan's largest city of Karachi, police said.

The News International reported at least 15 people were gunned down in Sunday's attacks in various parts of the port city with gunmen waving weapons spreading panic among residents.

The incident was sparked following a demonstration on the streets by supporters of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and others to protest the slayings of party workers, the report said.

The killings, which have claimed the lives of hundreds in the past year, have largely involved members and supporters of the Urdu-speaking Muttahida Qaumi Movement and the ethnic Pashtoon parties in the metropolitan city.

The city's woes are separate from the widespread militant violence in other parts of the country.

President Zardari asked Syed Qaim Ali Shah, chief minister of Sindh province where Karachi is located, to take stringent and effective measures for the maintenance of law and order in the city, the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan reported.
