BAGHDAD, March 16 (UPI) -- An al-Qaida leader in Baghdad and five followers were sentenced to hang Wednesday, Iraqi state television said.
"The Iraqi Supreme Criminal Court issued verdicts of death penalty by hanging for the criminal Munaf al-Rawi and five of his aides," state-run Iraqiya television said.
Maj. Gen. Qassim Atta said earlier that Rawi and his associates were responsible for many terror attacks in the capital over two years, including suicide bombings targeting government ministries, hotels, embassies, mosques, churches and polling places, China's Xinhua news agency reported from Baghdad.
Also, Maj. Gen. Dhiaa Hussein of the Interior Ministry said Wednesday 28 suspected al-Qaida militants have been caught in the last two months in Baghdad, Anbar province in the west and Nineveh in the north. One of them is "the minister of public relations" of the al-Qaida front called the Islamic State of Iraq, he said.
