MINAMI-SOMA, Japan, March 13 (UPI) -- A man was rescued from the floating roof of his house Sunday, two days after the earthquake washed it away, the Japanese navy said.

Hiromitsu Arakawa, 60, was discovered clinging to his roof Sunday morning, 9 miles out at sea, The New York Times reported.

His small house in the town of Minami-soma was ripped from its foundations by the tsunami's first wave Friday, the Defense Ministry said. Arakawa saw his wife washed away.
