Powerful earthquake rocks northeast Japan

TOKYO, March 8 (UPI) -- A 7.2-magnitude earthquake rocked northeastern Japan Wednesday, prompting a tsunami alert, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the quake off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture, Kyodo News reported. The quake struck around 11.45 a.m.

The BBC reported the tremor shook buildings in Tokyo.
