Canadian gets life term for bomb plot

BRAMPTON, Ontario, March 5 (UPI) -- A Canadian computer technician has been sentenced to life in prison for plotting to bomb the Toronto Stock Exchange and other sites.

Egyptian-born Shareef Abdelhaleem, 35, must serve 10 years before any chance of parole after his sentencing Friday by Ontario Superior Court Justice Fletcher Dawson, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reports.

"Mr. Abdelhaleem exhibits no genuine remorse or insight into his behavior and has so far not accepted responsibility for his dangerous actions," Dawson said in the Brampton, Ontario, courtroom.

Abdelhaleem was convicted in February 2010 of participating in a terrorist group and intending to cause an explosion.

Before the sentencing, he gave a statement asserting he never intended to hurt anyone.

"I am not denying what I did was wrong," he said. "I am sorry."

Tried under the Anti-Terrorism Act, he said he should have been tried as an "extremist" instead and gotten a lighter sentence.

Abdelhaleem was the last to be sentenced of the so-called Toronto 18, who were arrested in 2006. Seven had their charges dropped or stayed, seven pleaded guilty and four were convicted.
